The silent reader: Why you should optimize your corporate reporting now

Your Investor Relations team spends months preparing annual reports. Every wording is carefully considered, every key figure explained in context, every strategic message deliberately placed. And then? Your stakeholders ask ChatGPT and receive an answer based on Reddit, Wikipedia, or MarketScreener.
This is not a theory. This is the current reality.
AI is already reading your reports first
A recent study by FH St. Pölten, HHL Leipzig, and reporting specialist nexxar shows: nearly half of all retail investors already use generative AI tools to research companies and the trend is rising rapidly. ChatGPT alone accounts for 30.3% of all bot traffic on digital annual reports, making it by far the most active automated user, even ahead of Google or Bing.
The good news: AI actually reads your report. But only if you allow it to.
Format is not a formality, it is a communication decision
The study fed over 2,500 prompts about 20 listed companies into ChatGPT and evaluated more than 24,000 cited sources. The result is clear: companies with structured HTML online reports were cited by ChatGPT three times more often as a direct source than companies that publish only a PDF.
Even more concerning: for “PDF-only companies,” AI systems rely significantly more on external sources (e.g., news media, financial data aggregators, Wikipedia). The consequence is measurable: only 54% of AI-generated answers about “PDF-only companies” were factually correct, compared to 71% for companies with HTML reports. One third of the answers were simply wrong, not because the AI acts maliciously, but because access to your primary sources is limited.
What does this mean in practice?
If your key corporate messages such as strategy, ESG goals, financial metrics, etc. are buried in a static PDF that is difficult for machines to process, third parties take over the interpretation. AI relies on what it can understand, and increasingly, that means structured, machine-readable content.
This is not a technical issue. It is a communication issue.
AI as a new channel—if you allow it
The good news: you can take control. An AI-optimized report, whether as a structured HTML report or a semantically enriched PDF, ensures that ChatGPT and other language models rely on your original sources when responding to stakeholder queries. Your wording. Your context. Your messages.
Looked at the other way around: AI chats are now an independent communication channel to your stakeholders. If you prepare your report correctly, you automatically serve this channel with no additional effort, no need for your own AI infrastructure, and using content fully controlled by your company.
What needs to be done now
The question is no longer whether you publish an annual report. The question is: is it structured in a way that enables AI to present an accurate picture of your company?
With many years of experience and numerous successfully delivered projects, Silvester Group supports you in making your reporting AI-ready. From format strategy to structured digital reports to content preparation, we ensure that both human readers and language models are convinced.
