When AI stumbles – the limits of text correction using ChatGPT as an example

AI is revolutionary, but not flawless

Artificial intelligence is changing the way companies create, review, and optimize text. Automated tools such as ChatGPT save time, increase efficiency, and often deliver amazingly good results. But even the most advanced systems have their limits—sometimes even with the smallest linguistic nuances.

A real-life example shows how a seemingly harmless sentence can drive an AI into an endless correction loop – and what lessons companies should learn from this.

A sentence that confused ChatGPT

During a document review, we came across the following wording:

„Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“

At first glance, this appears to be correct—but ChatGPT repeatedly misinterpreted the perfect tense form “umfasst” and attempted to change it to the present tense. The result: contradictory correction suggestions and an endless loop from which the system could not escape. But see for yourself:

„Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ → korrekt: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ → „umfasst“ sollte „umfasst?“ in „umfasst?“ geändert werden. (Grammatisch korrekt: „umfasst“ → „umfasst?“ ist aber ein Tippfehler. Richtig: „umfasst?“ → „umfasst?“) → Wait: Correction needed. It should be „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ → „umfasst?“ should be „umfasst?“? (I’ll recheck) Richtig: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ → „umfasst?“ sollte „umfasst?“. Correction: It must be „umfasst?“ = „umfasst?“? (Ok, better: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ → korrekt: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ is wrong → must be: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ → richtig: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ Wait I’m stuck. Correction: Richtige Form ist: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ → korrekt: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ (Wait). Stop. Actually: In the doc it says: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ (Perfekt-Formulierung). Richtig wäre: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ → korrekt: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“. Correction: „umfasst?“ → „umfasst?“. Sorry confusion. Correction: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ → sollte heißen: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ → richtig: „umfasst?“ → „umfasst?“. I’ll simplify: The correct form is: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ → muss heißen: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ → richtig ist: „umfasst?“ → „umfasst?“. Stop. Actually easier: Fehler: Perfektform. Richtig: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ → korrekt: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ → correction is: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ → muss heißen: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ (Oh dear!). Let’s finalize: Fehler auf Seite 21/22: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ → korrekt: „Hat die Referenz mehrere Standorte umfasst?“ (Präsens: „umfasst?“ statt Perfekt „umfasst?“).

Why does this happen?

AI systems such as ChatGPT do not work based on “understanding,” but rather on pattern recognition and probabilities. As soon as a formulation is ambiguous or several grammatical rules apply simultaneously, even an advanced language model can falter.

What this example shows about AI

Prone to errors in nuances
Subtle differences between tenses or sentence structures can easily lead to misunderstandings.

Endless loops due to uncertainty
The less clear the rule, the higher the probability that the system will get stuck in a correction loop.

Human control remains indispensable
AI can provide support, but it cannot replace the critical eye of an experienced proofreader or editor.

In order for AI to bring real added value to text correction, companies should define clear rules:
